AMERICAN PSYCHO

CLIENT: CULT CINEMA U.K.

"
You're a fucking ugly bitch. I want to stab you to death, and then play around with your blood." - Patrick Bateman

American Psycho. Pre-Batman Christian Bale. Wall Street in the 80's. Yuppie Scum.
How could I not be excited about doing a poster for this film? This was a toughy though.
Created for a Cult Cinema Sunday screening of the film.

When it came to capturing the essence of the film, I originally wanted to convey it as more horror - but still subtle. My original plan was to have steam from a man hole breaking out of the chainsaw blades framing the composition and have numerous scenes (dreams/fantasies) playing out within it. That proved to be maybe a little much and perhaps over reaching a tad, in the end. Had to pull it back a bit.

I think what this film needed for a poster was something elegant with a touch of grit. I wanted to lock in on the feel of the 80s. Vogue magazine-esque. A cologne ad. Something vain and superficial. Like Im selling a product but you dont know what. I feel the final image says it all. The minimalism works.
Whats scary about this? What am I to be afraid of here? That works here.
I was heavily inspired by Patricks line:

"There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there."

Having him heavily shadowed as if hes either appearing from nothing amidst the haze or disappearing into nothing...is he even really there?

I think the print turned out fantastic and its one of my proudest works to date.
